As your reading this we will assume you are looking at ways to get rid of spiders from your home. The best way to combat any problem is to understand it. We will also assume that you may have a fear so we have intentionally not included a image of a spider.
Spiders can help protect your home against a wide range of insects and other pests. Some people however, cant stand the idea of having a spider in their home. It is very common to have a fear of spiders and having to try and remove them can give people extreme anxiety. Due to this more and more people are now looking at getting them to stop coming in completely.
Spiders feed mostly on insects and will try to build their webs in your home around places where insects will be. This will include windows and doors, any holes or points of entry as well as near water or food sources. This is why it helps to make sure your home is always clean to help minimise their potential food sources.
Many people are often fearful as most of them are venomous, although in reality a very high percentage of them are unable to poison a human. They can bite but as intelligent creatures they are extremely unlikely to approach a human, let alone try to bite one unless provoked.
There is also the rumour that people swallow spiders during the night, but this is untrue as spiders are intelligent enough to recognise your a giant in comparison and will actively try to avoid you. Another way to look at it is how often do you wake up in the middle of the night or morning and have a spider in your mouth? Sorry for the thought, but some people still genuinely believe this to be true.
How do spiders enter your home
There are many different ways in which spiders can get into your home. The most common way in which they enter your home is through the opening that you may have such as underneath your doors through an open window or any unsealed part of your home.
In addition to this, they may also enter through your home due to the small gaps between your floorboards which a spider can easily fit through.
They tend to invade your home more as it starts to get colder and weather starts to get worse. Although they can be very resilient, they want to build a comfortable home with a good source of food.
Be aware that some insects eat pollen and plants, which means even if you keep your home clean then your plants may be a source of food for insects, which will then in turn be a source of food for spiders.
As most spiders are nocturnal you may wake up and find lurking in your room. Spiders don't have the best vision but have a great sense of picking up vibrations, which helps make them aware when something is caught in their web. This means loud noises may prevent them from picking your home as potential nest (Maybe that noisy neighbour has their perks after all).
Best essential oils that spiders hate
Luckily there are natures scents that spiders find overwhelming and will try to avoid. There are some people who will just kill a spider, but by using oils you can help prevent them from coming in your home in the first place. Spiders are part of nature and we shouldn't kill them for trying to find a place to hang their web.
Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts from plants that have beneficial effects in a variety of different ways. Their powerful aromas can also help keep both spiders and insects out of your home.
The two best essential oils for keeping away spiders in particular are Tea Tree and Peppermint. Luckily both of these can be picked up quite cheap, and quite a bit cheaper than spider repellents that are sold in stores. There are also a number of other essential oils that spiders do not like such as Cedarwood, Citronella, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon and Orange.
As there are a number of scents to choose from it helps give you some choice in case your not fond of a particular one. Once you have chosen which essential oil you wish to use, we need to look at different ways these can be applied to help keep your home spider free.
How to use essential oils to keep spiders out of your home
Using an essential oils to keep spiders out of your home is not a new concept and they can be used in many different ways. Lets take a look at different ways these can be applied.
Spider repellents are often sold as a spray due to its ease of use. These are commonly made up of essential oils mixed with chemicals that are diluted in water. Most of these are harmful to humans and pets alike due to the chemicals in them, so we would suggest to make your own using an essential oil washing up liquid and water a placed into a empty spray bottle (glass if you wish to help protect the environment). The soap help breaks the oil down to mix better with the water for a better dilution.
The dilution can vary depending on how strong you wish your spray to be and how big your bottle is, everywhere has a different opinion on the matter but please take into consideration that most oils are highly concentrated and may be overwhelming in too high doses.
As for the washing up liquid you will only want a small drop. You will then want to vigorously shake the bottle, and then apply around windows, door frames and any other cracks or points of entry.
Due to some effort going into the dilution, some people opt for other methods.
The classic oil burner is one of the most common ways people use essential oils. You simply need to buy an oil burner, some tea light candles and a lighter.
All you need to do is fill the bowl of the oil burner with warm water as this helps speed up the process, use a drop or two of your selected essential oil and light the candle underneath. The heat from the candle will warm up the water and oil which will turn it into water vapour and scent your home.
Electric Oil Diffuser
An electric oil diffuser works in the similar method as the oil burner but rather than steam the water oil mixture it sprays it into the air without the application of heat. Instead it uses electricity to generate ultra sonic waves which can breakdown the mixture. Some people prefer this as they don't have to have a light candle in the house, especially if they have kids or pets.
The mixture of this depends on how big the water tank is, most of them you would apply 5-6 drops. Again you don't want too much to the point where the oil can be overwhelming as it is highly concentrated.
These electric oil diffusers can cost quite a bit more than the other two methods so you will need to decide whether this is a practical method for you.
The benefits of using essential oils are they can help prevent spiders and other insects from entering your home as a more natural method, and also one that works better than the idea of leaving conkers by your window (conkers didn't work for us).
Good news for us is that the essential oils they happen to not like are the ones humans enjoy. With a good selection to choose from, there is bound to be one you will love.
